Night cramps: what causes them and how to relieve them?
In some cases, nighttime cramps are caused by a medical condition. These include chronic kidney failure, diabetes, hypothyroidism, and certain neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis , amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), or polio . A person suffering from arteritis, varicose veins, or Raynaud’s disease will also be more likely to experience nighttime cramps.
How to treat leg cramps at night?
Even if it’s painful, the first thing to do when you suffer from a nighttime cramp is to gently stretch your leg and then massage the affected muscle for a long time. Contrary to popular belief, you should avoid applying cold to a cramp as this can encourage contraction.

Simply slip a piece of Marseille soap into a sock or washcloth at the bottom of your bed. Thanks to its high potash content, it helps combat the potassium deficiency that often causes cramps.
