Night cramps: what causes them and how to relieve them?

Nighttime cramps are common and sometimes very painful. While they are usually not serious, they may require a visit to the doctor if they persist.

There’s nothing more unpleasant than being woken from sleep by leg pain . Nighttime cramps are more common in the lower limbs, particularly in the calf, thigh, or ankle. The pain is relatively brief but can be very intense.

What is a night cramp? Definition

A cramp is an involuntary muscle contraction that suddenly occurs. It most often occurs after physical exertion, but it can also occur at night while we sleep. This contraction occurs when a muscle or group of muscles fails to relax after movement. We move during the night without realizing it, so it’s normal for cramps to appear even while we sleep.

 

What causes nighttime cramps? What deficiencies cause them?

There are many causes of nighttime cramps. It’s not uncommon for them to occur the night after a particularly intense workout, when you’ve missed a workout, or if you’ve skipped a warm-up. They can also be caused by insufficient hydration, or a deficiency in potassium or sodium, two electrolytes essential for muscle contraction.

Excessive alcohol or caffeine consumption, poor circulation, blood pressure and cholesterol medications, and pregnancy can also cause nighttime cramps.
